Every patient age 18 and older  in our practice  receives an annual VELscope Vx screening as part of our oral cancer screening exam that  is included in our routine dental check ups.  This is not an additional exam with an additional exam fee, but just part of our effort to provide our patients with the best quality dental care we can provide.

Each year in the United States, approximately 36,000 new cases of oral cancer are diagnosed.  An equally alarming statistic is the death rate from oral cancer.  If found in a late stage, the five year survival rate is poor, at approximately 32%.  However, if oral cancer is detected early and localized, the five year survival rate is much better at about 83%.  Only a biopsy can diagnose oral cancer.

The VELscop Vx has been approved by the FDA for use in dental offices to help screen for oral cancer, dysplasia, and a host of other oral diseases.

The VELscope Vx uses several blue LED lights that when viewed through the lens, illuminates healthy tissue with an apple green color.  Any tissue that is potentially dysplastic or abnormal will absorb the light, resulting in a black area.  If any areas of concern are found, we reevaluate the area in 2-3 weeks to see if any changes are present or if the area still appears dark with the scope.  If an area still appears dark at the reevaluation appointment, a biopsy is usually indicated because only a biopsy can diagnose cancer.

Who's at risk for oral cancer?
While anyone can develop oral cancer during their life, several risk factors can increase the likelihood of development:
*Tobacco use
*Excessive alcohol consumption
*Combination of tobacco and alcohol use
*Excessive sun exposure
*Low vegetable and fruit intake
*Use of betel nut and bedis
