4 Signs You May Need a Dental Crown

Jul 15, 2022

One of the most common therapeutic operations a dentist performs is placing a dental crown on a patient's tooth. In fact, according to DentistryIQ, in 2010, there were around 761 crowns installed for every 100,000 individuals, and in 2015, there were 781 crowns for every 100,000 people. In other words, more and more patients are opting for dental crowns, and there are several reasons why a tooth might require a crown. However, unlike other dental issues you might have, you may find it difficult to determine whether you need a crown. If you're wondering if it's time to get a dental crown, below are four signs you need one.

1. Large Filling

In your early years, you may have had cavities that needed substantial fillings. Perhaps this happened before crowns gained popularity. Perhaps you had a tooth that was very decayed and had to get a filling for most of the tooth. The original tooth may deteriorate, crack, and shatter with time. An old or big filling on a tooth may require a dental crown to reinforce and maintain the remaining tooth structure.

2. Broken or Fractured Teeth

If there isn't enough of a tooth left to heal it using other means, a crown may be the best option. The best way to fix a cracked or broken tooth is to cover it with a crown because these injuries don't usually heal. Only cracked or fractured teeth need crowns in order to be repaired.

3. Root Canal

To perform a root canal, the dentist must drill into the center of your teeth and remove all the decay. Unfortunately, this surgery might impair the tooth's structure despite being a required procedure. The rear teeth, or molars, which do the most chewing, are particularly susceptible to fracturing when a tooth is weak. Although the dentist occasionally uses fillings on the front teeth, a dental crown is an ideal option to safeguard the tooth.

4. Misshapen or Stained Teeth

If you have one or more teeth that are badly discolored or misshaped, you may feel insecure about your appearance. Smoking, drinking coffee and tea, or not taking adequate care of your teeth can all leave stains on your teeth. A chipped tooth, a congenital disease, or tooth grinding can all cause irregularly shaped teeth, as well. Your bite can be fixed by lengthening the vertical dimension with a crown if it has changed due to teeth grinding or dentition loss.
